Tom Joyce cultivated his love for spirits as a bartender during college. He made an initial investment in Montauk Distilling Company (MDC) in 2017, and is now a partner in the Riverhead, NY-based distillery. With a focus on sustainability and collaboration with regional farmers, MDC speaks directly to Tom Joyce’s commitment to home-grown talent, family-run businesses, and inclusive business models.

Tom retired as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Knight Capital Group in July 2013. Joyce had been at the firm since May 2002, joining as CEO. His legacy at Knight is shaped by his repositioning the company as an industry leader, transitioning them from less than $500M in annual revenues to approximately $1.2B in revenues with $250M pre-tax profits in ten years time. It was Tom’s leadership that brought Knight to recognition as a top equity trading firm in the US, regularly handing over two billion shares daily.

Thomas Joyce is also the founder of Direct Edge, a stock exchange with two separate platforms, EDGA Exchange and EDGX Exchange, now recognized as one of the largest stock exchanges in America. Tom was instrumental in the acquisition of Libertas Partners in 2008 and Knight Bond Point in 2006. These purchases allowed Joyce to expand the firm’s services with the inclusion of fixed income opportunities. A 2012 trading error put the firm at risk; Tom Joyce led the team through a careful and meticulous process of securing key investors and recapitalizing. Ultimately, Thomas Joyce is celebrated for saving Knight from bankruptcy and blazing a remarkable reinstatement as an industry frontrunner. 

Tom was appointed Sanford Bernstein’s Global Head of Trading at the end of 2001. Before that, he was at Merrill Lynch for 15 years, including as Head of European Equities in London and Head of US Equities in the US. His first position in the securities industry was as a stockbroker for Kidder Peabody in Boston, MA. Tom Joyce currently resides in Darien, CT with his wife Lisa and children.
